The Community Relations Division includes Community Forums, Community Engagement Academies, Youth Development, Recruiting, and Volunteers and Internships. Our Community members and our employees are key to creating and maintaining a safe community in which we live, play, and work. We value our relationship with the community and want to build positive and meaningful partnerships.

Community Engagement Academies

This one-day experience allows interested participants the opportunity to learn about police operations and obtain a personal view of what a day in the life of a police officer in your neighborhood is like.

Community members will participate in training, discussions, and presentations regarding Mesa Police Department policies, practices and procedures. Join us for this exciting police-community engagement opportunity!

Eligibility requirements:

  • 19 years of age
  • Reside in Mesa
  • Community leaders encouraged to attend
  • A background clearance is conducted prior to class start date

Lend a Helping Hand Volunteer/
Internships

Mesa Police Department Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) Program. We value our volunteers’ diversity of skills, abilities, education, and life experiences which they nobly donate to our community. Our volunteers perform a wide variety of duties throughout the department, enabling our paid personnel to concentrate on specialized tasks and better manage workflow. We provide on-the-job training enabling them to be successful. Volunteer Opportunities are available in Patrol Support, Victim Assistance, Detective Assistant, DUI Unit, Disabled Parking Enforcement, Office Assistant, Special Events, Police Range, Mobile Traffic Monitor, and License Plate Reader.

 

Volunteer/Internships Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years old
  • Valid driver’s license or identification
  • Complete application
  • Criminal background check
  • Fingerprinting
  • Certified copy of birth certificate
  • Certified copy of high school transcripts or G.E.D
  • Selection interview
  • Background interview/investigation
  • Drug screen
  • Polygraph

Department of Defense Skillbridge Program

The Mesa Police Department is a proud partner of the Department of Defense Skill bridge program. The department works closely with the Arizona Coalition for Military Families to provide opportunities for individuals transitioning out of the military. The programs allows service members to complete an internship with the Mesa Police Department within the last 6 months of their military service.
