Starting Salaries:

    • $50,960.00 during the time the officer is studying for AZPOST Waiver Tests
    • Upon passing the AZPOST waiver test the following pay scale will apply:
    • 10 months to 4 years experience - $26.02/hr ($54,121.60)
    • 4 to 5 years experience - $27.08/hr ($56,326.40)
    • 5 to 6 years experience - $28.47/hr ($59,217.60)
    • 6 to 7 years experience - $29.93/hr ($62,254.40)
    • 7+ years of experience - $31.46/hr ($65,436.80)

    • After probation, lateral officers may use 50% of their police agency time towards the three year requirement for specialty assignments.
    • After probation, lateral officers may use 50% of their former police agency time towards the three year patrol requirement.

     

    Minimum Qualifications Required:

    • At least two years of full-time experience as a peace officer in another state during the past three years, with at least one year spent in patrol, not including training or administrative assignments.

     

    Process:

    1. Applicants must first apply online at www.mesaaz.gov/about-us/jobs. Complete and submit the online application and supplement.
    2. You must then print, complete and notarize the background questionnaire packet and mail directly to: Mesa Police Department, Attn: Police Department Hiring Unit/ Background Investigator Westberg, P.O. Box 1466, Mesa, AZ 85211.
    3. Once the application is received it will be reviewed to determine if all of the minimum requirements for a lateral transfer are met.
    4. Testing process will include a physical assessment test, firearms assessment, selection interview, background interview, polygraph, and background investigation. If candidate is given a conditional offer of hire, then a psychological exam and medical exam must be completed.
    5. Once hired, applicant will become a City of Mesa employee and spend approximately 1 month studying for the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (AZPOST) waiver tests to become certified. During that month the applicant will be meeting other criteria, such as the AZPOST driving course, firearms course and physical fitness obstacle course. Once the applicant has successfully passed the waiver exams and become certified, they will complete a Department Lateral Academy for 4 weeks. This academy is to familiarize themselves with forms, computer systems, radio system, etc. They will then be placed into the Field Training Program where they progress at their own individual time frame.
